SEO For Dentists: From 100,000 Spam Links to Top 3 Rankings

A dental practice had effectively disappeared from Google after a malware attack created over 100,000 spam URLs. This is how Wise helped rebuild trust, recover visibility and take the practice from an average position of 92 to Top 3 rankings.

This was not a normal dental SEO campaign.

When people talk about SEO for dentists, they usually mean optimising treatment pages, improving Google Business Profiles, building local authority and helping a practice rank for searches like “dentist near me” or “dental implants in [city]”.

This case study was very different.

This was not about moving a dental practice from position 8 to position 3. This was about rescuing a practice that had effectively disappeared from Google after a devastating malware attack caused more than 100,000 spam URLs to become associated with the website.

The domain had ranked well for years. Then visibility collapsed. The average tracked position dropped to around 92. For any dental practice relying on organic search enquiries, that is the equivalent of disappearing altogether.

The practice had effectively disappeared from Google before the recovery strategy rebuilt visibility.

01.The challenge: a dental practice that Google no longer trusted

When the practice approached us, rankings were almost non-existent. Their average tracked position sat around 92 across key commercial search terms.

Important searches were buried deep within Google’s results, including:

  • Dentist in [City]
  • Private dentist in [City]
  • Emergency dentist in [City]
  • Dental implants in [City]
  • Cosmetic dentist in [City]

The issue was not competition. It was not content. It was not a lack of backlinks.

The issue was trust.

Months earlier, a compromised plugin had allowed malicious code to inject approximately 100,000 Japanese spam URLs into the website. Google detected the activity and associated the domain with spam. While the website owner was the victim, Google’s algorithms simply saw a domain linked to large-scale spam activity.

The rankings collapsed.

The spam attack damaged domain trust and caused valuable dental rankings to collapse.

02.Our initial SEO recovery strategy

As a specialist dental SEO agency, our first objective was to remove every trace of the attack and give Google a cleaner, safer version of the website to crawl.

The recovery process included:

  • Removing malicious code.
  • Securing the website environment.
  • Patching vulnerabilities.
  • Removing spam pages.
  • Blocking malicious URL structures.
  • Returning 410 status codes for spam URLs.
  • Cleaning Search Console errors.
  • Rebuilding XML sitemaps.
  • Re-indexing legitimate pages.

From a technical SEO perspective, the website was clean. The spam footprint had been reduced. The website environment was more secure. The legitimate pages were being presented properly again.

Yet rankings barely moved.

03.Building a completely new website

After months of limited progress, we made a strategic decision. Rather than continue investing into a compromised website environment, we rebuilt the entire website from scratch.

Every page was recreated. Every service page was rewritten. Every piece of infrastructure was rebuilt.

The new website was launched on a fresh domain while we continued to monitor the recovery of the original domain.

The rebuild included a full dental SEO campaign

This was not just a website redesign. It was a full SEO rebuild across local, technical, on-page and authority signals.

Recovery Area

Local SEO

Google Business Profile optimisation, local citations, geographic service pages and local authority building.

Recovery Area

On-Page SEO

Service page optimisation, internal linking, content expansion, metadata and structured data.

Recovery Area

Technical SEO

Core Web Vitals, crawl optimisation, indexation management and improved site architecture.

Recovery Area

Authority

Quality backlink acquisition, brand mentions, trust signal development and digital PR opportunities.

04.Eight months later... still no rankings

This is where many dental SEO campaigns fail.

Not because the strategy is wrong. Because patience runs out.

Despite months of improvements, the website remained largely stuck. Average ranking position still hovered around 92. Most business owners would understandably assume the campaign was not working.

The reality was different.

The website was improving. Technical issues had been fixed. The SEO foundations were stronger. The new structure was cleaner. The content was better. The local signals were developing.

Google simply had not fully detached the original domain from the historic spam signals.

SEO recovery takes more than quick fixes.

Wise helps dental practices diagnose deeper ranking issues, rebuild technical trust and create SEO strategies that support long-term patient growth.

05.The moment everything changed

By early 2026, Search Console data suggested the original domain was finally beginning to recover. Spam URLs were disappearing. Validation requests were passing. Google was gradually removing traces of the historic attack.

Then Google’s May 2026 search update arrived.

At that point, we migrated the website back to its original domain.

The turning point came when the original domain began to recover and the rebuilt site was migrated back.

Within days, rankings surged.

Keywords that had sat on page 10 for over a year suddenly began appearing in the Top 10, then the Top 5 and eventually the Top 3 positions. The response was almost immediate.

06.The results

Today, the practice ranks prominently across its most valuable local search terms. The campaign helped restore the practice’s position as one of the leading dental providers within its local market.

Result AreaOutcomeWhy It Mattered

The most important result was not just ranking recovery. It was trust recovery. The practice regained its position as a credible, visible option for patients in its local area.

07.What this means for dental practices investing in SEO

This project highlights something many dental practices do not realise. SEO for dentists is not simply about adding keywords to pages or publishing blogs.

Sometimes rankings are limited by deeper technical issues, historic penalties, security breaches or trust signals that are not immediately visible.

This recovery shows why technical SEO, website security and domain trust matter for dental practices.

Recovering from those situations requires:

  • Technical SEO expertise.
  • Website development knowledge.
  • Local SEO experience.
  • Strategic patience.
  • A clear understanding of how Google evaluates trust.
  • The ability to connect security, crawlability, content and authority into one recovery plan.

That is where specialist dental SEO becomes invaluable. A general SEO checklist is not enough when a practice is dealing with a domain-level trust issue.

09.FAQs About SEO Recovery for Dentists

Can a dental website recover after a malware attack?

Yes, but recovery can take time. The website needs to be cleaned, secured and rebuilt where needed, and Google may need time to reassess historic spam or trust signals.

Why did this dental practice lose rankings?

A compromised plugin allowed malicious code to inject approximately 100,000 Japanese spam URLs into the website. Google associated the domain with large-scale spam activity and rankings collapsed.

How far did the website drop?

The practice dropped to an average tracked position of around 92 across important commercial dental keywords, meaning it had effectively disappeared from useful organic search visibility.

What SEO work helped the recovery?

The recovery included malware removal, security improvements, spam URL cleanup, 410 status codes, Search Console cleanup, XML sitemap rebuilding, a new website, technical SEO, local SEO, content optimisation and authority building.

Why did rankings not recover immediately?

Fixing the visible issue does not always mean Google immediately restores trust. In this case, Google needed time to remove historic spam signals and reassess the domain.
